BSE DR Live on 4th and 5th July, 2016

Mumbai, Thursday, July 7, 2016: BSE along with ICCL (clearing corporation of BSE) has successfully conducted a 2 day LIVE trading session from its Disaster Recovery Site on 4th and 5th July, 2015.

All systems of BSE ran from its Disaster Recovery Site which is in a different seismic zone. The trading operations was performed from its Disaster Recovery Site itself, whereas the entire Business operations was performed from its Emergency Operations Centre.  The switch over to Disaster Recovery Site and coming back to Primary Site had been absolutely seamless with no impact to any of its systems and services. The market participant connections and trading volumes remained similar to any regular trading day on the Primary Site.

This is in line with regulatory mandate given to the Exchanges for conducting trading and operations from its Disaster Recovery Site for 2 consecutive days.

Regular trading has resumed from the Primary Site on Thursday, 7th July, 2016.

In order to provide Business Continuity across all its systems and operations, BSE actively maintains 4 sites viz., Primary Site, Disaster Recovery Site, Data Backup Site and Emergency Operations Centre.

A real time replication between Primary Site and Disaster Recovery Site ensures that all data is available at Disaster Recovery Site with near zero time lag. This enables BSE to switch-over to Disaster Recovery Site at any time during the day, in case of any eventualities. BSE had ensured that the switch-over and switch-back is transparent to the market participants and there is no change required at their (market participants) end.

BSE has about 60+ systems, application and services at its Primary Site, an equal copy of which is also maintained at Disaster Recovery Site. The switch-over to Disaster Recovery Site used to be very time consuming activity and involving a lot of manpower and co-ordination. The scale of complexities and inter-dependencies between these application was very high, which was prone to human errors. To overcome this, BSE has automated the entire switch-over and switch-back processes. The automation now manages the switch of all 60+ application. It also takes care of all interdependencies (database links, file interchange mechanisms, messaging etc) and ensures smooth transition. The automation tool also provides a real-time monitoring of the sync status between Primary and Disaster Recovery Sites. Automation has also helped reduce manpower requirement for handling operations from 100 to 10 persons.

BSE has also gone one more step further by automating all its daily beginning and end of day operations at its Disaster Recovery Site.

BSE's processes are compliant to ISO27001:2013 standards. BSE periodically undergoes various periodic process and site audits. BSE’s adopted policies ensure that all changes and releases at the Primary Site are also reflected at the Disaster Recovery Site. BSE conducts periodic mocks at its Disaster Recovery Site to ensure the end-to-end working of all systems and functionalities.
