The Derivatives Segment of BSE today recorded its highest volumes since the launch of Sensex futures on 9th June 2000. The Sensex futures recorded volumes of 1014 contracts aggregating Rs. 21.52 crs. Open Interests also increased in proportion to touch a volume of 1654 contracts.

BSE has given the facility of trading in Spread Contracts (simultaneous purchase and sale of 2 different month series) and the first spread trade of 50 contracts for the January-February series was executed today.

Volumes are slowly reaching a threshold level where we expect to see a spurt. BSE is aggressively involved in training of various participants in Derivatives and has conducted over 50 programs on "Introduction to Derivatives". Dr. Sanjiv Mehta, CEO, Derivatives Segment, BSE was quite upbeat and opined that "..this is just the beginning. Futures and options are excellent risk management tools which will progressively catch the imagination of various sections of the investor community"
