The Stock Exchange, Mumbai (BSE) in association with PNB Gilts organised
a Seminar on Governmnet Securities and Treasury Bills

On January 10, 2002, the Stock Exchange, Mumbai (BSE) in association with PNB Gilts, organised a Seminar on Governmnet Securities and Treasury Bills by Shri Arun Kaul, Managing Director, PNB Gilts Ltd. The seminar covered the following :

  • The growing importance of the Government Securities Market
  • Characteristics of the products (Government Securities and Treasury Bills)
  • The market dynamics and settlement aspects
"The Stock Exchange, Mumbai (BSE) has played a major role in educating investors and other market participants with a view towards bringing about a healthy, safe and resilient capital market. This seminar has been organised with a view to disseminating information on the debt markets for different investor segments", says Mr. R. Vaidyanath, General Manager - Business Development (Markets), BSE.

The seminar is directed towards a large untapped population of investors (both at retail and institutional level) who are still unaware of the advantages of the investment in Government securities and Treasury Bills.

PNB Gilts Ltd. - a subsidiary of Punjab National bank is a leading Primary dealer of the country. Mr. Arun Kaul, Managing Director, PNB Gilts Ltd. states , " The Government Securities market is growing by leaps and bounds and this year it is expected to cross Rs. 10,00,000 crores. In the years to come, we expect that in India - like the developed financial markets of US and UK, the debt markets may overtake the equity market in terms of share volumes. This presents a challenge to the intermediaries to equip themselves for the future market".

BSE has been offering a retail-trading platform for the Corporate Debt Instruments through its 'F' Group and on June 15, 2001 launched the Wholesale Debt Segment of the Exchange. BSE has planned for a Retail debt segment for G-secs and T-Bills which will enable the retail investor to participate in this dynamic and potential market which has hitherto been dominated by the wholesale investors.
