Sensex breaches the circuit limit

SEBI vide their circular No. SMD/RPD/Policy/Cir-37 dated June 28, 2001 has stipulated that the index based market wide circuit breaker system shall apply at three stages of the index movement either way at 10% (975 pts), 15%  (1450 pts) and 20% (1950 pts). SENSEX touched 13963.30 and Nifty touched 4203.30.

Since the indices breached 15% level, the markets will be closed for two-hours and hence the market will reopen at 11:55 hours.

The SENSEX is computed periodically based on traded prices at that point in time. This morning when the SENSEX reached 13479 points i.e. 1306 points higher than previous close, in terms of SEBI guidelines on market closure, trading was halted immediately on BSE.

Subsequently, after execution of orders that were already in the system when the breach took place, the updated SENSEX shows a level of 13963 points ie 1790 points higher than previous day’s close.
