General Information about Data Feed

  1. What is Data Feed?
    • Stock trading activity generates enormous amount of valuable data. This data includes traded prices, traded volumes and trends. All Indices, including SENSEX, are computed from this trade data.

      In addition, there is a huge amount of information with BSE on the listed companies, as a consequence of regulations requiring them to file information with BSE regularly like shareholding pattern, financial results and major announcements. These data resources which are distributed in real time or on delayed basis through dedicated communication lines or Internet is known as Data Feed.

  2. What are Key Stations?
    • The distributors of BSE disseminate the data through terminals. These terminals (end user) are known as Key Stations.

  1. What is Level 1 Data Feed?
    • Level 1 Data Feed package provides the following information

      Scrip Code
      Open, High, Low and Last Traded Price
      Best Bid / Offer with Volume
      Traded Volume
      Close and Last Traded Quantity (Only for live feed)

  2. What is Level 2 Data Feed?
    • In addition to the data provided in Level 1 Data Feed package, the following data is available in Level 2 Data Feed package

      Weighted Average Price
      Upper Circuit Limit and Lower Circuit Limit
      Turnover Value, Number of Trades, Trend
      Best 5 Bid Rates /Quantity and best 5 Ask Rates / Quantity
      Total Buy quantity and Total Sell Quantity

  3. Is it required to subscribe to Level 1 and Level 2 Data Feed separately?
    • If you subscribe to Level 2 Data Feed, you will get all the data from the Level 1 Data Feed in addition to the data exclusively available to Level 2 Data Feed subscribers.

  4. Can a Level 1 Data Feed subscriber upgrade to Level 2 Data Feed?
    • Yes. You can upgrade to the Level 2 feed by just informing BSE about your interest and paying the applicable additional charges for upgrading to Level 2

  5. Is it possible to buy data only of some selected stocks?
    • Yes. If you are subscribing to the BSE feeds through a BSE Distributor you can request your distributor to provide you a selected basket of stocks. Currently, the following baskets are available

  6. Usage of Index data?
    • BSE Indices are being used for the following purposes:

      1. Dissemination on the BSE trading terminals and BSE website
      2. Underlying for derivative products
      3. Sale through BSE datafeed service (Real-time, Historic & EOD)
      4. Licensing for Index Funds and Exchange Traded Funds
      5. Benchmark for Mutual Funds
      6. Licensing for Index Linked Structured Products

  7. Is it possible to subscribe to the Indices only?
    • Yes. You can subscribe exclusively to stock Indices.

  8. How to subscribe Index Constituent level files?
    • Constituent level End-Of-Day file for BSE Indices is available in different packages.

      1. Package 1:
        Broad based Indices:
        Includes SENSEX, BSE-100, BSE-200, BSE-500, BSE Mid-Cap and BSE Small-Cap index.

      2. Package 2:
        Sectoral Indices:
        Presently includes 13 indices i.e. BSE PSU Index + 12 sectoral indices (upto BSE Power index).

      3. Package 3:
        Combination of Package 1 & 2:

      4. Package 4: Basket comprising any 4 indices from package 1 and any 6 indices from package 2

  9. What is Corporate Data?
    • All the listed companies are required by regulations to file with BSE the corporate information before releasing it to the public. BSE receives all such corporate information as per the requirements of the listing agreement. This information is converted into a format that can be easily incorporated into a database.

      Corporate Data has three components:

        Financial Results: Financials results for every quarter as per the latest format prescribed by SEBI.

        Corporate Announcements: Various announcements made by the company, which are price sensitive in nature, including information about new projects, new orders, regulatory actions, dates of Board meetings, corporate actions and issues, dividend payments, amendments to Articles, general meetings etc. In addition to the summary of the announcement , a scanned copy of the communication received from the company shall be provided as an attachment , wherever the announcement is detailed.

        Shareholding Pattern: Shareholding pattern at the end of each quarter. The above information is disseminated in Data Feed in XML format.

  10. What is Book Building Data-feed?
    • Book Building has emerged as the most preferred option for the corporates to raise money from the public.
      BSE provides an online Book Building facility in which bids are entered through the large network of BSE Brokers across the country.

      The Book Building process generates significant data on the bids:

        - Number of shares bid for
        - Price point at which the bids have been placed
        - Type of bidder

        This information provides a guide for the investors about the status of the bidding i.e. the level of investor interest in the public offering and the pricing points at which the bids are active, and to then take a decision on how much to bid and at what price.

        BSE provides this bidding data, updated every 5 minutes, through its real time Data Feed network.

        (BSE also makes available the prospectus of every public issue for download, before the commencement of the bidding process.)

  11. What are Public display tickers?
    • Display tickers, (including LED, LCD, plasma or such displays) which are installed in public places for public viewing are categorised under Public Display Tickers

  12. What is Debt data feed?
    • Data feed consisting of reporting and trading data of debt instruments (including bonds, debentures, government securities ) is known as Debt data feed.

Categories

  1. What is Real Time (Standard) Data Feed?
    • The data feed which is disseminated immediately after it has been generated is known as real time data feed.

  2. What is Low Latency Feed?
    • Low Latency feed is a data feed where the lag between the generation of the data and its dissemination is very low, i.e. few milliseconds. BSE provides low latency Level 2 data feeds, especially for the use of subscribers who want to implement Direct Market Access applications and Algorithmic Trading Applications.

  3. What is delayed feed /snapshot feed / internet feed?
    • Delayed Feeds: - Feeds which are disseminated after a delay of atleast 5 minutes after the generation of the data are termed as delayed feeds.

      Snapshot Feeds:- A snapshot of the market is taken at a regular interval (normally every minute) and disseminated.

  4. What is Algorithmic Trading application?
    • An application developed for trading using algorithms for generation of orders is called a Algorithmic Trading application. These applications can use BSE Low Latency data feeds.

    A typical End-of-Day-Quotation file contains Open-High-Low-Close-Volume (OHLCV) data. This is provided as a HTTP downloads through the Internet.

    Special discounted prices are available for End-of-Day-Quotations data.

Subscription formalities

  1. What are the formalities to be completed before subscribing to the feed?
    • An agreement needs to be signed for subscribing to the data. Further the requisite fees should be paid prior to commencement of the feed.

      Agreement is not required towards subscription of End of Day data and Historic data.

Delivery

  1. How is the data delivered at the customer location?
    • BSE has two modes of delivering data at the customer location
      MLDN Set-up: MLDN Set-up is a dedicated leased line connection between BSE and the customer for receiving the live data.

      The customer is required to pay the connection charges levied by the service provider.

      BSE charges only for port usage The Data Feed is provided at 2 MBPS. The data is provided in binary format.

      HTTP Server: This mode is used for sending data over the Internet for providing 1-minute snapshot, 5 minute delayed snapshot and End-of-Day Quotations. Live feed is not available through HTTP server.

      BSE provides the customer with a login ID and password for accessing the server.

      The information is provided in the .csv format.

  2. How to get leased line connectivity?
    • BSE arranges for the leased line connection between BSE and the customer through MTNL /Tata Teleservices/Reliance Communications. An additional ISDN line can be provided for emergency backup.

Customers

  1. Distributors and Redistributors

    1. Who is a Data Distributor / Vendor?
      • A person or organization who has been authorized to resell the data provided by BSE, to end subscribers or redistributors is designated as a Data Distributor / Vendor. A Data Distributor / Vendor shall take the data directly from BSE.

    2. Who is a Data Redistributor / Revendor?
      • A person or organization authorized to provide data to end subscribers in the form of a product or as a service is designated as a Data Redistributor / Revendor. A Data Redistributor/ Revendor can enter into a direct contract with BSE but will be supplied data by a Data Distributor/vendor.

        A Data Redistributor can provide data only to an end subscriber. A Data Redistributor is not allowed to distribute data to any other redistributor.

    3. What are the benefits for Data Redistributors?
      • A Data Redistributor who has entered into an agreement with BSE for Real Time data but takes a feed from a Data Distributor is required to pay 80% of the base charge that is applicable to the Data Distributors. This is taking into consideration the fact that redistributor is supplied data and supported by a distributor. Websites / Portals

  2. Website

    1. What kind of Data Feed is available from BSE for Websites/Web Portals?
      • All BSE data products can be subscribed by Websites/Web Portals.

    2. What is difference between Closed User Group website and Open User Group website?
      • - Closed User Group website: These are websites which charge a fee to their end users for providing access to BSE data. The Paid Subscriber websites have to share the per subscriber charges to BSE in addition to annual fixed charges.

        - Open User Group Website : The websites which display BSE data on without requirement of fee from the website user for viewing the information.

    3. Any charges to be paid for display BSE data on Open User Group Website?
      • BSE data feed is a paid service.
        In case of a Data Feed distributor/ re-distributor subscribing for a real time data feed, 10 minutes delayed data can be displayed only on the distributor's/ re-distributor's website.

    4. As a BSE Member, can I display BSE stocks, indices data on my website?
  3. TV Channels

    1. What kind of data is available for TV Channels?
      • TV channels are provided Level 1 feed.
        Data can be accessed either directly from BSE or through an authorized data distributor.
        TV Channels subscribing to Real Time data can also display 10 minutes delayed data on their websites.
        TV channels can also exclusively subscribe to Index products.

    2. Is there any special offer for a group of TV channels?
      • If more than one channel from a group of TV channels subscribes to the Data Feed, special discounts are provided to each additional channel. The first channel subscribing for the Data Feed is required to pay the full basic rate. Each additional channel is required to pay only 25% of the list price of the product it subscribes to.

  4. Print Media

    1. What kind of data is available for the print media?
      • Stocks, Indices, Corporate data as well as End-of-Day-Quotations are made available by BSE to the print media for publication in their newspapers/magazines.

  5. Mobile Operators

    1. How can Mobile Operators or Application Service Providers access data From BSE?
      • Mobile Operators or Application Service Providers can access live data from BSE for dissemination to their subscribers Data can be received either through the Internet or through the leased line also.

  6. Index Creators

    1. Is BSE data available for Index creators?
    2. Is there any scheme for companies for developing and marketing products based on stocks and indices?
      • Special schemes are available for companies developing and marketing products based on BSE stocks and indices.

    3. Can customized index service be provided by BSE?
      • Customized index service is provided to companies desirous of subscribing to this service.

  7. Listed Companies

    1. Can a company listed on BSE, display its own stock price live on its website?
      • BSE has special products for listed companies, especially for the purpose of investor relations.

  8. Others

    1. Is it possible to get some specific data from BSE archives/historical data without being a regular subscriber of the Data Feed?
      • You can get historical data as per your requirement. The fee will be dependent on the type and period of data.Historical data will be End of Day data

    2. Is it necessary to acquire the Data Feed from BSE directly?
      • It is not necessary to directly acquire the Data Feed from BSE. You can get the feed from any of our authorized Data Distributor or Data Redistributors. In case you are a Redistributor accessing the Real Time feed through a Data Distributor, 20% discount on the base prices will be applicable.

Billing Information

  1. What are the payment terms for subscribing to the Data Feed?
    • For Real time distributors, Fixed minimum charges are payable in advance in March and September as indicated in the schedule of prices. Data Distributors and Data Redistributors are required to file a monthly declaration of the number of key-stations utilized during each month. There will be monthly billing for any additional key-stations utilized during the month.
      Delayed feed distributors are required to make the payment of fees annually.

Unit of count

  1. What is a unit of count?
    • The subscriber shall be counted as follows
      For a person who accesses the data through multiple service providers shall be counted as multiple subscribers. A subscriber served by a single service provider but serviced through multiple devices, e.g. Data Terminal, Internet, mobile devices etc., shall be counted as a single subscriber only if the subscriber is able to use one device at a time. Simultaneous use of data by the subscriber on multiple devices will be considered as multiple subscriptions and shall be charged accordingly.
